The department of La Paz is located in the north-eastern part of Bolivia. The capital is a cosmopolitan, multicultural city surrounded by Andean mountain ranges which reach heights of more than 21,000 ft/ 6.400 mts. and include spectacular peaks such as the famous Illimani and Illampu.
The center of the city is crisscrossed by narrow streets and dotted with colonial style buildings. In the old section of town you will find a number of museums and historical sites, as well as seemingly endless artisan stalls. While in the La Paz area you should be sure to visit the ruins of Tiwanaku, the town of Copacabana, as well as Coroico, a serene, tropical town in the Yungas.
