The department of Oruro is located in the western part of Bolivia. The capital city owes its existence to the mineral rich hills which rise up behind it. Today Oruro is known as the folkloric capital of Bolivia and is famous for its magnificent and lavish Carnival celebration. This celebration is a fascinating mixture of pagan and religious beliefs, and with its incredible costumes and dances is an event not to be missed.
A visit to Oruro also offers you the chance to tour San José Mine or spend a day or two in Sajama National Park.
