“EDUARDO AVAROA” NATIONAL ANDEAN FAUNA RESERVE (REA)

Flamencos0“EDUARDO AVAROA” NATIONAL ANDEAN FAUNA RESERVE (REA)
“Eduardo Avaroa” National Andean Reserve REA, was created in 1973 with a surface area of 714,745 H. Located southwest of the Potosi district at 4,000 meters / 13,123 feet, in a region of irregular relief with extensive plains and plateaus bordered on the west by a group of volcanic mounds (Western Mountain Range). The vegetation on this reserve is characterized by the presence of dry straw pastures. In places where there is more humidity, one can find tholares and in some rocky streams keñua. Fauna is characterized by the presence of three species of flamingos (Andean, Chilean and from James), these give the reserve its uniqueness. The best month to visit this Reserve is November, because of the presence of numerous flamingos and because of the weather conditions. This area of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve has a predominantly volcanic landscape with masses of dry acid lava, such as those of Ollague among others. The places of interest in the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve are:

  • Colorada Lagoon. The colors and population of the flamingos are the inherent elements that give it its name. At midday and in the afternoon, that coloring becomes more pronounced.
  • Sol de Mañana. This place is characterized for its intense volcanic activity and the emission of gases. One can observe boiling lava in the craters and the gas vapors that are let out reaching an altitude of 10 to 50 meters; this phenomenon allows us to appreciate a landscape that goes back in time to the creation of the earth.
  • Green Lagoon. It has a surface area of 17 Km2. It has an emerald green coloring due to the high concentration of magnesium in its waters. Near this lagoon is the Licancabur volcano with an altitude of 5,868 meters /  19,252 feet. This is a place where mountain climbing can be practiced.
  • Hot Springs. At the Salada Lagoon in the Polques region, this is another tourist attraction of the REA. The quality of the water and its temperature make it and important destination.
  • Dali Valley. It is a group of volcanic rocks situated in the middle of a sandy area, Pampa Jara, near the Chalviri Salar. The surreal shapes of the rocks, like a Dali painting, and its location, are elements that draw attention to this area.

The entrance door to this paradise is the town of Uyuni, from which traveling begins, passing through the Uyuni Salar and continuing all the way to the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve with all its attractions.
